A dynamic fruit sale message opens this full tutorial on variables in Power Automate for Desktop: Text, Number, List, and input and output variables.
My 6+ hour Power Automate Desktop e-learning (Beginner to Pro) is in my community, 7-day free trial: https://iloveautomation.ai/community
The case is Fresh Fruit Limited, a London fruit shop, and the flow is built from an empty canvas. "Display message" starts as a static message about apples. "Set variable" introduces a %Fruit% variable set to Banana, picked with the x button instead of typed. "Display input dialog" takes the fruit from the user, stores it in %Fruit% and records which button was clicked. Rename the two button variables through the three dots to distinguish the input dialog from the display message. An "If" runs the message only when the button pressed equals OK, so a cancelled dialog ends the flow. An input variable ExoticFruit with the default Pineapple shows how values arrive from a Power Automate cloud flow. The Number part sets a price of 2.6 with a dot as decimal delimiter and reads it from a second input dialog. "Truncate number" with "Get integer part" gives 2, and "Round number" with 0 decimal places gives 3. One expression with the and operator checks both dialogs in the same "If". The List part creates Vegetables with "Create new list", adds Potato and Onion with "Add item to list" and prints each item in a "For each". "Set variable" with %['Beets', 'Carrots', 'Spinach']% fills the list in one action.
TOP LEARNINGS
🔹 Pick variables with the x button instead of typing them
🔹 A dot is the decimal delimiter, even when your culture uses a comma
🔹 "Truncate number" belongs inside the "If", or a cancelled price dialog throws a numeric value error
Values of variables only exist while the robot runs and reset when it stops, but the last run's values stay visible in the variables pane. Deleting unused variables such as ExoticFruit keeps the flow tidy and saves performance. A data table is the next variable type, saved for the Excel session of the course, and the next lesson waits at the end of the video.
