Building a DIY chicken run? Here are 5 chicken run mistakes I made trying to save money—and what I'd do differently if I were starting over!
I've been raising backyard chickens for about 16 years, building and expanding my chicken coop and enclosure along the way. My current chicken run has been a great addition to our backyard, but some of my budget-friendly construction decisions have caused more headaches than they were worth.
In this video, I'll walk you through my homemade chicken run, show you what went wrong, and explain how I'd build it differently next time.
We'll cover:
🐔 Wobbly roof beams from trying to save money on lumber
⛈️ Why tarps weren't a great substitute for a permanent covered area
🔨 The difficulty of installing chicken wire overhead
🕳️ How dust-bathing chickens created gaps around the perimeter
🐦 Why using leftover wire mesh with different-sized openings caused problems
I'll also show you a few things I'm proud of, including the larger enclosure, chicken enrichment activities, and dedicated dust bath.
Whether you're building a chicken run from scratch or improving an existing enclosure, hopefully my mistakes can save you time, money, and frustration.
Have you built your own chicken run? What would you do differently? Let me know in the comments!
