This is the divine story of Goddess Parvati’s journey from Mount Kailash to Thiruvanaikaval, where her intense penance led to the manifestation of Maa Akhilandeshwari and the sacred Appu Lingam.
According to a popular tradition associated with Thiruvanaikaval Jambukeswarar Temple, Goddess Parvati once unknowingly disturbed Mahadev’s deep meditation. Shiva asked her to leave Kailash and perform intense penance on Earth. Parvati accepted the divine command and journeyed to the sacred Jambu Van on the banks of the Kaveri River.
There, she created a Shivling from the waters of the Kaveri and devoted herself completely to Shiva worship. This sacred form came to be associated with the Appu Lingam — the Water element, one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams.
But the most mysterious part of this divine story was yet to come…
Lord Shiva appeared before Parvati not as her husband, but as her Guru, while Maa Parvati became the devoted Shishya receiving the sacred knowledge of Shiva. This is why Thiruvanaikaval is also revered as an Upadesha Sthalam.
Through this divine leela, Maa Parvati came to be worshipped here as Goddess Akhilandeshwari — the Goddess of the entire universe.
