Discover how developer Petri Purho’s experiments with falling-sand simulations eventually led to Bloody Zombies, a small prototype that proved simulating individual pixels could lead to fun gameplay. Years later, Petri teamed up with Arvi Teikari and Olli Harjola to push that technology much further and build the custom Falling Everything engine that would eventually power Noita. The documentary also explores why building an impressive simulation turned out to be much easier than turning it into a fun game. The developers experimented with everything from a God game and a Terraria-like sandbox to fully destructible buildings and a drill that allowed players to dig through almost anything. Many of these ideas sounded great in theory but created new design problems once Noita’s systems began interacting with each other. Eventually, games like Spelunky helped inspire the team to turn Noita into a roguelike with procedural generation and permadeath, giving players a reason to understand and experiment with the simulation rather than simply watch it unfold. It also takes a closer look at how Noita simulates liquids, fire, gases and rigid bodies, how the developers built a huge continuous world without simulating every pixel at all times, and how systems like the wand-building mechanics, Herringbone Wang Tiles and hidden areas helped turn that technology into a complete game. Finally, the documentary looks at Noita’s Early Access release, its 1.0 launch, the community that continued pushing its systems far beyond what the developers expected, and how Nolla Games kept expanding the game years after release.
