Atami Beyond the Resorts | Ancient Hot Springs, Shrines & Fireworks

Atami is often known as a seaside resort and hot spring getaway — but behind the hotels and ocean views is a much older story. In Day 1 of this trip, I walk through Atami’s historic hot spring district, visiting Yuzen Shrine, the legendary Oyu Geyser, and the old springs known as the Seven Hot Springs of Atami. Along the way, we discover how hot spring culture shaped the town, how Tokugawa Ieyasu helped raise Atami’s reputation during the Edo period, and how faith and hot springs have remained closely connected here for centuries. Later, I visit Izusan Shrine, one of Atami’s most important historic sites. The shrine is closely associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo and Hojo Masako, whose story would eventually become intertwined with the rise of the Kamakura shogunate. And after a long day of walking, the evening ends with the Atami Sea Fireworks — followed by a few quiet moments from our family trip. This trip was partly for filming and partly a family getaway. My daughter may not remember much of it one day, but I know I will.
