Last Christmas a guest quietly asked me who did the catering. There was no caterer, and everything on that table except the food cost me twenty-three dollars.
These are eleven old tricks for a holiday table that looks expensive on almost nothing: a pressed bed sheet for a tablecloth, cloth napkins, mismatched thrift store china in one colour family, a brown paper runner with everyone's name on it, candlelight, a centrepiece from the yard, the one-dollar trick that makes cheap glasses look like crystal, and the upside-down bowl that gives your table height.
And number one is the one most of us get wrong for forty years. My mother certainly did.

DISCLAIMER
General ideas and personal experience only. The FDA warns that some old, antique, hand-painted or decorative ceramics can leach lead; use them for display or check them with a home lead test kit, and don't store acidic food in them. Never leave candles unattended, and keep them well away from greenery, paper and napkins; battery candles are a safe choice. Only cut greenery from your own yard, and keep berries away from children and pets. Prices are from my own town in 2026 and yours will differ.
