Malibu's $40M Homes Are Sliding Into The Ocean — 30-Foot Sinkhole, 31 Evacuated, El Niño Coming

On September 8, 2026, a sinkhole opened in the driveway of an oceanfront home on Sea Level Drive in Malibu. Twenty-five to thirty feet deep. Sixty feet long. The City of Malibu declared a local emergency, thirty-one residences received evacuation orders, and five homes were red-tagged. The cause, per the city's proclamation, was coastal erosion. Thirteen days later, Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency for all of California — ahead of an El Niño that forecasters say could become the strongest in recorded history. Two emergencies in thirteen days on the same coast. And the winter has not started yet. Malibu is failing in two places at once. On the beaches, the sand that absorbs wave energy is gone. On the hillsides above Pacific Coast Highway, homes sit on marine shale and sandstone tilted toward the ocean, threaded with ancient slide planes, many of them burned bare by the Palisades Fire. Here is the part that ties it together. Every major Malibu disaster traces back to the same kind of winter. The El Niño seasons of 1978, 1980 and 1983. In 1983 the Big Rock Mesa slide began moving — 137 acres — and the pumps that hold it back have been running ever since. More than 76,000 gallons a day, still, four decades later.
