Nobody in the room notices anything except an unusually good performance. The odd metres are real — 7/8 and 9/8 from the tapan tradition, slowed to downtempo speed so they walk with a limp instead of dancing. The album's motif is not a melody but an interval: two voices a whole tone apart, held, beating against each other. It arrives sung, then bowed on gadulka, then as two detuned oscillators, then as a smear — and in the last track there is one voice and nothing above it.
Built from kaval, gadulka, tambura, gaida, tapan and tarabuka, with open-throated singing left hard and unpretty, and a tape machine that audibly wears out as the album goes on. There is exactly one track with real forward drive: the procession, when the body comes out of the dark house into the white lane. Everything after it is subtraction. She refuses the wool at the door — which no hired mourner does — and walks down the mountain having grieved for free.
For long dark drives, cold rooms, difficult weeks, and anyone who has done emotional labour for money.

SUPPORT THE JOURNEY
This is the harshest record in the catalogue and it was never going to be the popular one. It exists because a handful of listeners keep the difficult albums viable alongside the comfortable ones. If it earned forty-six minutes of your attention, a contribution keeps the next difficult one from being talked out of existence.
