In 1218, Genghis Khan sent a caravan of about 450 merchants to the richest empire in Central Asia. They were killed at Otrar, and what followed changed the map of the world. He ran his empire on spies, merchants and relay riders, one of the first great information networks. So what if Genghis Khan had had AI? A thought experiment built on real history: Temüjin's rise, the kurultai of 1206, the decimal army, the yam relay and the paiza, the Mongol script, the Khwarazm campaign and its human cost, the feigned retreat at the Kalka, his death in 1227, the split into four khanates, the turn back from Hungary, the storms that wrecked the invasions of Japan, the Pax Mongolica and the Black Death. Everything the machine says is invented and marked on screen as A QUESTION, NOT HISTORY. Figures such as the size of the Otrar caravan, the speed of yam riders and the death tolls of the conquests are estimates from medieval sources and modern historians, and they are debated. The reasons for the Mongol withdrawal from Hungary in 1242 are still argued.
