Ten thousand strong at least. Helm's Deep is not just the best siege ever filmed. It is the shape every siege since has copied, and you can watch the shape being invented.
A video essay on the Battle of Helm's Deep in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), directed by Peter Jackson, and the case that it is the template for every movie siege since. It covers how Helm's Deep was filmed: 120 days, three months of nights at Dry Creek Quarry outside Wellington, Alan Lee's fortress designed first, the miniature Miramax wanted chainsawed, and Stephen Regelous's Massive software filling the valley with simulated soldiers. Then the analysis breaks the battle into the grammar every siege copies, from Aragorn's ten thousand strong and the map of the Deeping Wall to Gimli and Legolas keeping count, the breach, the ride out, Gandalf and the Rohirrim at dawn, and the line that says it was only the beginning. Along the way it traces the shape into Game of Thrones, from Blackwater to The Long Night at Winterfell.
