an advert break from channel 4 television on the 9th of may 2000 during a showing of the david lynch film 'wild at heart'. first up is a big-brother surveillance-style advert for the men's fragrance 'oblique' by givenchy, which came in 'rewind', 'play' and 'fast forward'. then it's an animated 'nick walters' (voiced by mark williams from 'the fast show' and the harry potter films) from sky tv, showing us how customisable and flexible the sky digital service is. next is a very rad and urban advert for pepsi max, with a skyscraping skateboarder taking delivery of a can in a very destructive way... followed by the national lottery advertising your chance to win one of a million free thunderball tickets. the internet had expanded by leaps and bounds by the year 2000 and the 'bubble' was just starting to burst by may of that year, and many small startups struggled to survive in a crowded field over the next two years. aol (america on line), however, were in plenty of uk homes by then and here we see the company advertising their parental controls with the 'connie' character (in her characteristic cyber-dress) helping a sardonic dad to prevent the kids from seeing bad things online. do you still have an aol sign-up cd-rom in your home? finally, it is carlsberg export lager with another instalment in their humorous ad series with the theme of 'the danes hate to see it leave'. then its back to the film... 'sailorrrr!'. subscribe for more nostalgic retro tv commercials and other rare 1980s - 2000s vhs video treasures 😎.
