Christmas morning, 1978. You tore off the paper, and inside was something that cost about £1.50. One of those has since sold at auction for £26,670 — and the man who owned it took it to the auctioneers on a whim, with no idea what he was carrying.
This video counts down 12 classic British Christmas presents from the 1970s and what they're actually worth today.
The annuals every child got — Beano, Dandy, Blue Peter, Shoot — and why the spine and the dust jacket decide everything. First edition Roald Dahl, including why the American Knopf printing of Fantastic Mr Fox came out months before the British one and uses a different illustrator. Original selection boxes and Christmas tins, the ultimate throwaway item. Sindy, where the separately-sold outfit sets are scarcer than the dolls. Palitoy's Action Man, where the flock hair, gripping hands and complete uniform accessories carry the value. Dinky and Corgi die-cast, where a mint model in its original box can be worth twenty or thirty times the same model loose.
Then the big-ticket gifts. The Raleigh Chopper, made in Nottingham, where an honest unrestored example beats a repainted one every time. Hornby and Tri-ang train sets, where boxes and inserts add significant collector value and rare Hornby Dublo sets reach upwards of £2,000. Textured Whitefriars glass by Geoffrey Baxter, with the tangerine Banjo vase in the £700–£1,000 range. Hand-painted Poole Pottery Delphis, where a Tony Morris charger reached £5,200 at a London auction.
And the story most people have forgotten: Christmas 1977, when Star Wars demand outstripped production so badly that British children unwrapped empty boxes containing a certificate promising the figures would arrive in the post.
At number one — the Palitoy Jawa. In July 2023 at Excalibur Auctions, a vinyl-cape Jawa on its original 12-back card sold for £26,670 against an estimate of £10,000–£15,000. Only 10 to 15 examples are documented, and the auctioneer confirmed the UK Palitoy card is even rarer than the American Kenner version. Then the same owner found a second one in his loft, and it sold in January 2024 for £19,500.
Before the loft gets cleared this year: check the boxes. Check the annual's spine. Check the base of the vase for a monogram.
