The Ren journey continues on CJ’s Corner / The Reaction, and today on the Block Party we are checking out Ren — Back on 74 / Message in a Bottle Live Retake. After reacting to Ren’s Halftime Retake, which might still be my favorite Ren reaction so far, I asked the Renegades for something a little different — and y’all definitely delivered with this one. Before jumping into this, I checked out Back on 74 by Jungle so I could understand the original feel first. Now we get to see what Ren does with it live, and once again, he shows why he is different. The voice changes, the guitar, the live energy, the way he pays respect to the original, and then flips it into his own style — that is what makes this Ren rabbit hole so interesting. In this reaction, I talk about Ren’s versatility, his voice being another instrument, his ability to shift genres, his crazy wordplay, the Jungle influence, the Message in a Bottle section, and how this took me back to growing up with 80s music, MTV, rock, pop, R&B, hip-hop, and all the different styles that shaped how I listen today. What stood out most is how Ren does not just cover songs. He pays homage, respects the original artist, and then creates something new from it. That is real musicianship.
