How did humans discover wine thousands of years ago? Long before vineyards, wineries, bottles, or modern fermentation equipment, wild grapes were growing across the ancient landscapes of the South Caucasus. At some point, crushed grapes were left sitting long enough for natural fermentation to transform their sugary juice into an alcoholic drink. But discovering fermented grapes was only the beginning. In this video, we follow the fascinating journey from accidental fermentation to deliberate winemaking. We explore how ancient humans experimented with grapes, learned which varieties worked better, developed storage and pressing technology, domesticated grapevines, and eventually spread wine across the ancient world. We also look at some of the earliest archaeological evidence for wine production, how wine became connected with trade, agriculture, religion, feasts, hospitality, and ancient cultures, and how scientists eventually discovered the invisible microorganisms responsible for fermentation. From wild grapes and primitive clay vessels to modern vineyards and scientific winemaking, this is the story of how one of humanity’s oldest beverages came to exist.
