Vocal : Ustad Hafeez Ahmed Khan Ustad Hafeez Ahmed Khan (1926–2006) was a highly respected Hindustani classical vocalist and one of the leading exponents of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana, a major tradition of North Indian classical music. Born in Uttar Pradesh, he received his musical training through the traditional gurukul system, developing a versatile and powerful vocal style grounded in the khayal tradition. Alongside his musical education, he pursued academic studies and earned a master’s degree in Political Science, and he also taught at the University of Minnesota. His distinguished career extended beyond the concert platform, he served for many years at All India Radio, New Delhi, eventually becoming Deputy Chief Producer, and later served as Vice-Chancellor of Indira Kala Sangeet University, Khairagarh, contributing significantly to music education and administration. His artistry was preserved in numerous archival recordings of khayal, thumri, tarana and other forms; All India Radio archives, for example, document his performances in ragas including Nayaki Kanada, Puriya Kalyan, Abhogi, Bihag, Bhairavi, Bhopal Todi and Gunkali. He was also a dedicated teacher and mentor whose disciples included Rajendra Prasanna, Roma Rani Bhattacharya, Sakuntala Narasimhan and Subhendu Ghosh, thereby extending the Rampur-Sahaswan tradition to succeeding generations. His recordings brought his distinctive voice and musical interpretation to audiences beyond India, including the internationally released album North Indian Vocal Music, recorded in 1991 and released in 1995. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1991 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1996 for his contribution to Indian classical music. Hafeez Ahmed Khan was also associated with the world of cinema, appearing in the German film The Rain Maker, based on the life of Tansen. His musical presentations abroad were particularly appreciated for combining performance with explanations that helped international audiences understand the nuances of Indian classical music. He passed away in New Delhi in 2006, leaving behind a significant legacy as a vocalist, teacher, broadcaster, academic administrator and influential representative of the Rampur-Sahaswan musical tradition. ----------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER: These songs have been uploaded solely for listening pleasure and as an archive to preserve Hindustani music.
