In 1911, the Mona Lisa disappeared from the Louvre. For more than two years, the world's most recognizable painting was missing — and the man behind the theft had worked inside the museum.
This is the story of Vincenzo Peruggia, the empty wall that drew crowds, and the encounter with an Italian art dealer that brought Leonardo da Vinci's painting back into view. The theft did not create the Mona Lisa's fame from nothing. It added a mystery that traveled around the world.
