What if you've been caring for someone your whole life… without ever realising you're a carer?
For Dr Ru Ying Cai, caring wasn't something she chose or even recognised. It was simply part of growing up.
After migrating to Melbourne as a child, Ru found herself taking on responsibilities that many other children never had to think about. From navigating language barriers and family expectations to managing her father's health needs, she spent years supporting others without recognising the impact on herself.
In the first episode of **Carers Cuppa: In Their Words**, Ru joins Different Journeys' Mel Spencer for an honest conversation about the invisible responsibilities of caring, cultural expectations, loneliness and the often difficult journey towards accepting support.
Together, they explore what changed when Ru finally recognised herself as a carer, how setting boundaries transformed her family relationships, and why finding a community of people who understand can make such a difference.
*Because sometimes, the person doing the caring needs care too.*
