But how did a small island of just 22 million people become a cricket nation capable of beating giants like India and Australia? We go to Colombo to find out — and end up meeting a legendary coach, Nelson Mendis, and the next generation of Sri Lankan cricket stars. In 1996, everything changed. During a 26-year civil war, Sri Lanka went all the way to the World Cup final — and beat Australia to become world champions for the first time. They had already beaten India twice in the tournament. And this was only the beginning. Sri Lanka reached the World Cup final again in 2007 and 2011, facing Australia and India. And then there are the legends. Muttiah Muralitharan took 800 Test wickets — more than any other bowler in cricket history. Kumar Sangakkara. Sanath Jayasuriya. Names known far beyond Sri Lanka. But every legend starts somewhere. At the Colombo Cricket Club, the School of Cricket began in 1998 with just six students. Today, around 400 young players are training there. We meet them. We hear their dreams. And then they take over — teaching us how to play cricket. 🏏 We came here spontaneously just to see cricket. We left with something much bigger: a glimpse into the passion, history and dreams behind one of Sri Lanka’s biggest sporting obsessions. Cricket came to Sri Lanka with the British. Today, it belongs to Sri Lanka.
