Palamuru is facing a serious irrigation water crisis as farmers in the Jurala ayacut area demand water to protect their standing crops. Protests have intensified around the Priyadarshini Jurala Project, with farmers questioning why irrigation water is not being released despite water being available in the reservoir. Recent reports say farmers even opened a canal regulator themselves after repeatedly demanding water, following which irrigation officials and police were deployed at the project. The issue has now turned into a major political controversy in Telangana. Farmers from Gadwal, Wanaparthy and surrounding Palamuru areas have been demanding immediate water release, while opposition leaders have also sought the release of water and criticised the government's handling of the situation. Several BRS leaders were detained or placed under house arrest as they attempted to reach the Jurala Project for protests. The Telangana government, however, has defended its position, citing low inflows, water scarcity, drinking-water requirements and the impact of El Niño. Minister Jupally Krishna Rao said the available water has to be used carefully and that the government has been advising farmers to cultivate less water-intensive crops.
