Given the fact that many of the earliest #MickeyMouse shorts recycled gags and ideas from the Oswald the Lucy Rabbit series, it's not too surprising that Disney would poach itself again for content within the same year. "The Haunted House" finds Mickey interacting with anthropomorphic skeletons, reusing the designs, music, and even some of the animation from the first Silly Symphony, "The Skeleton Dance."
In the midst of a frightening storm, Mickey Mouse seeks refuge in an old, abandoned house. The only problem: it's haunted! A phantom orders Mickey to play music while skeletons dance around. When Mickey tries to break free, they naturally chase after him.
Walt Disney directed the short, in addition to providing the voice of Mickey. This short features a "mammy" gag, a popular reference to Al Jolson's vaudeville act, first immortalized on screen in "The Jazz Singer," the first mainstream film with synchronized sound. Censors had no problem with this, but did object to the potty humor, the placing of a chamber pot under a bed with two skeletons, and Mickey's final attempt to flee the skeletons by running into an outhouse.
