For the past nine years, the Union Cabinet, the RBI, and various other institutions under the Modi government have been working towards this goal, and now those efforts appear to have reached a crucial stage. After Air India was transferred to the Tata Group in January 2022, bringing an end to the government’s 100% ownership of the airline, another major state-owned institution is now at the centre of a privatisation debate: IDBI Bank, or the Industrial Development Bank of India. The central government has been trying to disinvest its stake in IDBI Bank for nearly nine years. Now, Canada-based Fairfax Financial Holdings has emerged as the preferred buyer for a 60.72% stake in the bank. In simple terms, the proposed deal would transfer majority ownership and control to a foreign investor. While the government officially describes this as a strategic stake sale and disinvestment, critics see it as another major step towards privatisation. The government claims that the deal will help strengthen IDBI Bank financially, attract foreign investment, improve management, and make the bank more competitive. However, the transaction also raises several important questions. Why is the government selling its stake in a bank whose financial performance has reportedly improved? Is the proposed sale price fair? And as private ownership expands and government control reduces, what could happen to ordinary customers, their deposits, banking services, and access to credit? In this video, we will break down the entire IDBI Bank deal in simple language, examine the government’s arguments, look at the concerns raised by critics and employee unions, and explain what the proposed sale could mean for the bank’s customers. Watch till the end to understand the facts, the claims, the potential risks, and the questions surrounding one of India’s biggest banking disinvestment deals.
