Is French Girl Beauty Just For White Women?

Exploring the timeless elegance of French minimalistic makeup while discussing the visible gap in representation for French Black women over 60 within the classic French beauty aesthetic. Today's video is a deeply personal one as I prepare for my upcoming trip to Paris. This entire journey started when I was watching AliceInParis on YouTube. Her insights into Parisian beauty completely inspired me—especially the concept that French makeup is about "aliveness" and enhancement rather than masking flaws. We always hear folks marvel at how effortlessly chic older French women are, and how they don't use makeup to cover up their age. But it brought with it a heavy query: What does French Girl Beauty look like on my 66-year-old Black skin? That was the question as I searched across social media—even YouTube—to find representation. There was none. There were white or white-leaning representatives, but I couldn't find one French Black woman in her 60s. And I don't mean a French expat. I mean a Black French woman, born in France, who can track the expression of French chic from a Black perspective and see if it applies to her cultural expression of beauty. Where are the mature Black women, and why aren't they represented in the time capsule of French makeup and beauty? Why do the images we see most center freckled, fresh-faced young White women? Where the Black folks at? My interest here isn't to criticize the makeup techniques I grew up observing, and in some cases adopting, as a Black American in the USA. Rather, it is to lean into my living list desire to go to Paris, to acquaint myself with the culture, and to understand the lens through which Parisians see and experience life. So, as you watch my first attempt at employing a French technique in my makeup application, understand that it is simply out of curiosity in some respects. But most of all, it is providing me with more information to achieve that natural, alive, life-full beauty that resonates most with me. Still, a part of me wonders where the mature dark-skinned Black Parisian natives are—the ones born in France whose voices and representation are so deeply needed in this space. I hope this video starts the conversation and inspires a Black Parisian woman past a certain age to take to social media with her vantage point, lived experience, and unique makeup techniques. They might mirror Alice's, or they might not. Regardless, her presence is needed. Since the internet couldn't show me the way, I allowed Google's AI Overview to give me a 4-step template, grabbed the makeup I already owned, and put the technique to the test. Then used concealer only on spots where needed. The Method: I lined my upper eyes with the gel pencil and smudged it out gently with a Q-tip and finished with a light coat of mascara to wake up my eyes.
