Its 32-bar AABA form, repeated ii–V movement, strong voice leading, and contrasting bridge make it a great study in how to outline jazz harmony clearly while creating variety from chorus to chorus. I begin behind the melody with a supportive two-feel, then move into a steady walking bass line for the solo choruses, using chord tones, non-root notes on downbeats, chromatic passing tones, melodic direction, and rhythmic ideas to keep the line moving without falling into repetitive patterns. We’ll also look at how pitch choice can emphasize the harmonic contrast of the bridge, how rhythmic variation can change the direction of a walking line, and how to build a busier two-feel without getting in the way when the melody returns.
