Some of the most dangerous things you can eat are in your kitchen right now. Not exotic poisons. Not rare tropical plants. Everyday foods you have seen your entire life — sitting in your fridge, growing in your garden, on the shelves of every supermarket. 🌿 This video covers every major toxic vegetable, plant and food on the planet — what makes each one dangerous, how dangerous it actually is, and what the safe version looks like. EVERY TOXIC FOOD COVERED IN THIS VIDEO: ✅ Rhubarb Leaves — the stalks are safe and delicious. The leaves contain very high concentrations of oxalic acid that cause nausea, vomiting, burning in the throat, seizures and kidney failure. The British government recommended them as food in World War One. People got poisoned. ✅ Elderberries — ripe cooked berries are safe and medicinal. Unripe berries, leaves, bark and roots contain sambunigrin — a cyanogenic glycoside that converts to hydrogen cyanide. Raw unripe elderberries cause immediate intense vomiting within minutes. ✅ Tomato Leaves and Stems — the tomato is a nightshade family plant. The leaves and stems contain solanine and tomatine — alkaloid compounds causing nausea and neurological symptoms. The fruit evolved to be eaten. Everything else evolved to be left alone. ✅ Potato Sprouts and Green Potatoes — solanine forms in potatoes exposed to light or allowed to sprout. It is colourless, tasteless and cannot be seen or smelled. Cooking does not destroy it — solanine is heat-stable. Symptoms include confusion and hallucinations. ✅ Cassava — the third largest carbohydrate source in the tropics, eaten by hundreds of millions of people — contains linamarin that converts to hydrogen cyanide when the root is cut or chewed. Bitter cassava varieties require multi-step processing to be safe. A condition called konzo from insufficiently processed cassava has permanently paralysed thousands of people in central Africa. ✅ Raw Kidney Beans — four to five raw kidney beans cause severe vomiting within one to three hours. The lectin phytohaemagglutinin binds to gut cells and disrupts normal function. A slow cooker does not reach the temperature required to destroy the toxin — it may increase it. Always boil kidney beans before slow cooking. ✅ Ackee — Jamaica's national fruit. On the Jamaican coat of arms. Also the source of Jamaican Vomiting Sickness. Hypoglycin A prevents glucose production causing hypoglycaemia that can progress to coma and death. Fresh ackee cannot be legally imported into the United States. ✅ Apple and Cherry Seeds — contain amygdalin that converts to hydrogen cyanide. Swallowing whole — low risk. Chewing — activates the chemistry. Apricot kernels marketed as cancer cures in the twentieth century caused deaths from cyanide poisoning. ✅ Bitter Almonds — the wild ancestor of sweet almonds. Five to ten bitter almonds — potentially fatal for a child. The sweet and bitter almond are the same species separated by one gene. Banned from sale as food in many countries. ✅ Nutmeg — safe in culinary quantities. Five to fifteen grams causes hallucinations, racing heart, seizures and severe depression that can last more than a day. Deaths have been documented. Medieval physicians knew this. ⚠️ This video is for educational purposes only.
