The British Battleship HMS King George V
HMS King George V was the lead ship of the Royal Navy’s King George V-class battleships and one of the most significant British capital ships of World War II. Commissioned in December 1940, she embodied the Royal Navy’s response to the growing threat of Axis naval power, combining heavy armament, strong armor, and advanced fire-control systems.
Designed under the constraints of the Washington and London Naval Treaties, King George V represented a balance between firepower and protection. Her main battery of 14-inch guns was smaller than some contemporaries, but her advanced design and robust defensive features made her a formidable opponent in any engagement.
Service and Operations
HMS King George V entered service at a critical moment in the war. She played a pivotal role in the hunt for the German battleship Bismarck in May 1941, delivering decisive blows that contributed to Bismarck’s sinking. Later, she supported Arctic convoys, participated in the invasion of Sicily, and served in the Pacific during the final stages of the war against Japan.
Her operational history reflects versatility—engaging in fleet actions, convoy escort, and shore bombardment—cementing her reputation as one of the Royal Navy’s most important assets during the conflict.
