Power Smash (known in the West as Virtua Tennis) is a sports video game focused on tennis matches. Developed by Hitmaker (Sega AM3), it was originally released in Japanese arcades in December 1999 before expanding globally. Running on the Sega Naomi arcade system board, the title focuses on straightforward, accessible gameplay, using only a directional input and two buttons to execute moves such as standard shots and lobs. The game simulates both singles and doubles matches, featuring real licensed athletes from the era competing on various court surfaces, thereby laying the groundwork for the franchise's popularity in the years that followed. Version Trivia The original arcade version of Power Smash utilized the Sega Naomi board, which shared the same basic architecture as the Dreamcast home console. This technical similarity allowed the arcade game's code to be ported directly to the home console with a high level of fidelity regarding physics and polygon rendering. Unlike the home port released in 2000—which included expanded training modes and a World Circuit campaign—the original Naomi version was strictly designed for arcade-style progression, requiring the player to defeat five consecutive opponents to complete the main mode. 0:00 - Start 0:05 - Naomi Intro 0:26 - Game Intro 3:58 - Player Selection 4:08 - Matches Begin 17:36 - Ending #VirtuaTennis #PowerSmash #SegaNaomi #ArcadeGaming #SegaAM3 #Hitmaker #RetroGamingAds #JapaneseCM #CoinOp #Dreamcast #RetroSports #ClassicArcade #SegaArcade #1999Games
