Throughout the series, we’ll look back at different vocalists, producers, and DJs, and scene makers who influenced its development. Our third episode takes us back to turn-of-the-millennium London, where 2-step garage emerged from the UK garage scene to become a defining sound of the era. First gaining momentum on pirate radio stations, it captured dance floors and pop charts alike with its infectious syncopated rhythms, deep basslines, and soulful female vocals. More than just a sound of its time, 2-step also helped pave the way for dubstep, as later producers pushed UK garage’s rhythmic and bass-heavy innovations into darker, more stripped-back territory. In this episode, we share some of our favorite 2-step tracks — a journey through an era when soulful voices glided effortlessly over those unmistakably skippy beats.
