In today’s edition of Sounds From Afar, Felix Appiah turns his attention to Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa over the controversy surrounding the government’s evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.
The Minority and NPP communicators have raised questions about the documentation and figures behind the reported GH¢49.72 million spent on the evacuation exercise, including discrepancies they say appear in the records for allowances paid to evacuees. They have called for greater transparency and, in some cases, an independent audit.
Ablakwa has strongly rejected claims that money is missing, insisting that “not a cedi, not a pesewa” is unaccounted for. He says all 1,964 evacuees received GH¢5,000 in reintegration support plus GH¢500 for transport, and the Majority side of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee says the expenditure has been fully documented.
Felix Appiah, however, argues that Ablakwa should now be subjected to the same level of scrutiny and accountability he demanded from previous NPP administrations while in opposition.
Are the figures sufficiently explained, or does the Foreign Affairs Ministry still have questions to answer?
