When should an Enneagram practitioner, teacher, friend or fellow student suggest that someone may be mistyped?
There’s a well-established principle in the Enneagram world that we don’t tell other people their type. Finding your type is part of the journey of self-discovery, and rushing in with an answer can interfere with that process.
But what happens when someone has spent years working with a type that doesn’t fit — and the growth work isn’t helping?
In this video, I explore the space between speaking up too soon and staying silent for too long. I talk about ego-readiness, psychological safety, subtype knowledge, respect and agency — and why I think type is most useful when we hold it as a hypothesis rather than an absolute fact.
I also share two mistyping stories, including my own experience of discovering I was a Self-Preservation Seven rather than a Sexual Seven.
This video is part of my Mistyping & the Enneagram series, exploring why mistyping happens, when it matters, and how we can approach type discovery with more precision and care.
