Picking longkong fruit in Vietnam the way we actually do it - no ladder, no gloves, just reaching up into the branches of our own garden.
These are longkong, also called langsat or lanzones. They grow in heavy clusters straight off the trunk and the older branches. Ours look smaller and rougher than the ones sold at the market because nobody sprays them, but the flesh inside is sweeter. Of all the exotic fruits in Vietnam, longkong fruit is the one our family waits for every year.
There are only a few trees in the garden, so the picking is slow and quiet. Most longkong fruit in Vietnam is picked this way on small family farms - no machines, nobody in a hurry. No narration, no music over everything, just the sound of the garden.
If you have never seen longkong fruit growing in a real family garden, this is what it looks like: langsat hanging in bunches at head height, dry leaves underfoot, and a whole afternoon to do it in.
The channel has more days like this one - durian harvests, pomelo picking, bamboo shoots, coffee and pepper gardens, and the village market in the rain. Subscribe for more longkong fruit and exotic fruits in Vietnam.
Harvesting longkong from our own trees is the easy part; waiting for the longkong harvest to ripen is the hard part. A small family garden, and a real piece of Vietnamese farm life and Vietnam village life.
