With perfect temperatures and blue skies, it was a fantastic day on the trail and even better getting to spend quality time hiking with family.
The Rio Cebolla Trail (#68) is one of the easier and more scenic hikes in the northern Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. Beginning near the Seven Springs Fish Hatchery off Forest Road 314, the trail follows the Rio Cebolla upstream through a beautiful meadow-and-forest valley. Along the way, hikers are treated to numerous creek crossings, beaver activity, small waterfalls, lush forests, and incredible mountain scenery.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, the trail is approximately 4.9 miles long, starts at about 8,200 feet in elevation, and is rated easy to moderate, making it a great choice for hikers of all experience levels.
One of the most fascinating parts of this hike is the local history and legend surrounding the old Lazy Ray Ranch. Located about a mile up the trail near a small reservoir, the ranch ruins can still be found hidden within the valley. Local lore suggests that the ranch may have served as a summer retreat for notorious Chicago gangster Al Capone during his visits to the Jemez area and its famous hot springs.
But is the Al Capone connection true? The answer is maybe. While the story has been passed down for decades throughout the Jemez Mountains, historians have found very little evidence proving that Capone actually owned or stayed at the Lazy Ray Ranch. Like many stories from the Southwest, it remains a fascinating piece of local folklore that continues to spark curiosity among hikers and history buffs alike.
Whether you're interested in hiking, New Mexico history, wildlife, waterfalls, or hidden legends, Rio Cebolla Trail #68 offers a little bit of everything. Thanks for joining us on another adventure in the beautiful Jemez Mountains!
