Learn how to tell a bargain from a money pit, in my ebook The Bluewater Buyer's Manual: https://everydaysailing.gumroad.com/l... The median American boat owner is now 60 years old, and there are more owners in their 70s than in their 40s. The enormous fleet of sailboats built between 1970 and 1990 is reaching the end of its design life at exactly the moment its owners are reaching the end of their sailing lives. This video is what that does to sailboat prices, and which boats it will not touch. 📊 The demographics: median owner age, the baby boom cohort now aged 62 to 80, and why this wave behaves nothing like a normal market cycle — because what forces the sale is the calendar, not the economy. 🏭 The fleet they built: 15,000 Catalina 22s, 6,662 Catalina 27s, over 6,500 Catalina 30s, plus the Pearson 30, Tartan 30, C&C 30, Hunter 30 and O'Day 30 — against a fibreglass hull design life of 30 to 50 years, and builders who no longer exist. Plus the collapse in new sailboat sales from 18,600 units in 2001 to 4,300 in 2010. 💵 What they are worth: brokered Catalina 30s at 9,900 to 29,000 dollars, and by-owner boats at 3,000 to 3,800 — the two markets, and why only one of them is visible. 🗑️ The disposal trap: 200 to 500 dollars per foot to scrap a fibreglass boat, 10,000 to 15,000 to remove a derelict, 52 million dollars spent disposing of 1,000 boats after Hurricane Irma, and the recycling quote that 9 out of 10 owners refuse. 🧾 The squeeze: insurance age bands at 20, 25 and 40 years, the 2005 tax law change that killed boat donation, and a 30-footer paying 7,200 dollars a year in slip fees while being worth 3,800. ⛵ And what survives it: the bluewater cruisers with documentation that are holding value in a market where almost nothing else is, plus a four-rule buyer's playbook. 📘 The Bluewater Buyer's Manual – my 296-page ebook on choosing, inspecting and pricing a cruising sailboat: https://everydaysailing.gumroad.com/l... ⛵ Boats in this video: Catalina 22 Catalina 27 Catalina 30 Pearson 30 Tartan 30 C&C 30 Hunter 30 O'Day 30 Searched by sailors as: boomer sailboat sell off, used sailboat prices 2026, cheap sailboats for sale, free sailboat, abandoned sailboats, derelict vessel, cost to scrap a fibreglass boat, insuring an old sailboat, is the sailboat market crashing, Catalina 30 value, buying an old sailboat, bluewater cruiser resale value. #sailing #sailboat #boatbuying ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⭐ JOIN THE CHANNEL (member perks)    / @everydaysailing   Subscribe for more videos! 🌊 ALL MY LINKS https://linktr.ee/everydaysailing ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Copyright Disclaimer This video may include copyrighted material used under the "fair use" principle for educational and informational purposes.
