The Six Million Dollar Man’s $6 million budget is worth about $43 million today. So what would it really cost to rebuild Steve Austin in 2026 with real bionic legs, a bionic arm and a bionic eye? In 1973, the government rebuilt one Air Force colonel for $6 million. We itemize the whole job at today’s prices, from the operating table to a lifetime of upkeep. Rebuilding him is cheap. Making him better is a different story. Spotlight Moments: Converts the 1973 price: about 500 years of an ordinary family’s income, or roughly 180 new houses Reveals the real crash behind the opening credits: NASA’s M2F2 in 1967, and test pilot Bruce Peterson Prices the legs: powered knees and ankles for about $500,000, but no 60 miles an hour Tests the arm: muscle signals, nerve implants and a 2025 AI-powered hand, the closest thing to Steve Austin Exposes the eye: about half a million dollars for shapes in the dark, with no zoom lens and no night vision Totals the hidden bills: hospital, rehab and $4.5 million in upkeep bring the final invoice to about $7 million The show’s writers got the strength wrong but the wiring right. Fifty years later, real bionic limbs work the way The Six Million Dollar Man said they would. Rebuilding Steve Austin is a bargain. Making him superhuman means inventing technology that doesn’t exist yet, and that could cost a billion and a half dollars. In 2026, he’s the billion dollar man. 00:00 Intro 01:34 1973 Price Tag 03:11 Meet Steve Austin 05:02 The Real Crash 05:36 Bionic Legs 07:38 Bionic Arm 10:54 Bionic Eye 12:49 Hospital And Rehab 13:40 Lifetime Upkeep 14:10 Who Pays 15:01 The Final Invoice 15:48 Billion Dollar Man 17:12 Bionic Woman Next Join the conversation: Should we price out Jamie Summers, the Bionic Woman, next?
