In this intense continuation of the debate, Honourable George Musisi (NUP MP, Kira Municipality) and Honourable Yusuf Nsibambi clash over the real meaning of the recent prisoner releases.
Musisi argues that every release should be celebrated because the detainees should never have been imprisoned in the first place. However, he warns that without addressing the toxic political environment that keeps producing new arrests, Uganda risks being trapped in a “perpetual cycle” of releasing some while others are taken.
Nsibambi defends his role as a negotiator, revealing behind-the-scenes talks with the President, the DPP, and the courts, and strongly backs the Inter-Religious Council’s involvement. He insists the focus must shift from how people get out to the bigger national need for dialogue between opposition and government.
Key questions explored:
Does pleading guilty weaken the struggle or simply free people?
What exactly has Nsibambi negotiated so far?
Is the Inter-Religious Council being used to “cleanse” a dubious process?
Are there any real conditions attached to these releases?
A raw, unfiltered exchange on strategy, principle, and the future of political detainees in Uganda.
