The Christian Philosopher Episode 32: St. Thomas Aquinas' Argument for the Existence of God: Simplified And Explained (Part 2) In this episode we pick up part 2 of St. Thomas Aquinas' argument for the existence of God. One Necessary And Spiritual Ground Of All Reality Method of Procedure: We are going to work as St. Thomas Aquinas often did. We are going to use reason to demonstrate things about God that our natural knowledge can show and then verify those philosophical conclusions with what God has supernaturally revealed about Himself in Scripture. How We Know About God’s Attributes: When we think about what God is really like, some ideas are more foundational than others in our knowledge. We can’t see God as He actually is in Himself, but insofar as we can know Him some ideas are more foundational than others in the sense that we derive some attributes of God first, and then from those, we learn about others. God As The First Cause: Philosophy tells us that a first cause must exist. So once we have established the existence of a First Cause. Now we can build on that notion through a philosophical analysis of what a First Uncaused Cause must be like, which will take us into the arguments for the divine attributes. So when we learn about the nature of God, obviously we can’t go and observe and directly “see” what God is like with our eyes. We have to use our reason. One of the ways we do this is by a process of exclusion and showing what the First Cause is not (via remotionis). When we do this we can demonstrate a number of very important facts about the nature of a First Cause. For more information visit http://www.ScottMSullivan.com
