When Grief & Grace Coexist

Over thirty years of friendship; my move from Canada to the USA brought us together and on a journey neither of us could have imagined dispite the miles over the past 20 years. In this episode my dear friend Melanie and I reconnect and reflect on us meeting in a faith community , her career focus , and the medical journey of her beloved daughter, eventually leading to a diagnosis of retinoblastoma. After fifteen surgeries and chemotherapy, her daughter Santanna went on to complete her master’s degree and earn her licence in speech language pathology, looking forward to the future she had worked so hard to build. Tragically, she passed away last year, not from the cancer itself, but unexpectedly from complications following treatment. There were tears in our conversation, and we allowed ourselves to pause, grieve, remember, and simply hold space for the pain. Alongside this tender story, we talk about our friendship, faith, resilience, and Melanie’s own remarkable journey from teaching at a school for the blind to returning to school as an adult and earning two master’s degrees while balancing family and work. This is a conversation about the realities of grief, the sustaining power of faith, and the beautiful truth that grief and grace can coexist.
