The Alcardo Andrews Foundation provides an alternative route and builds resilience within communities affected by violence and poverty in Hanover Park, South Africa.
South Africa has some of the highest levels of gang violence in the world. Its roots run deep, reaching back to apartheid-era spatial segregation and generations of inequality, poverty and unemployment.
In communities where economic opportunities are limited, gangs can offer young people income, status and belonging, creating cycles of violence that are difficult to break.
The Alcardo Andrews Foundation (AAF) is working to create safety and support for children and young people in Hanover Park through after-school programmes, youth groups, education support and feeding programmes. These spaces nurture development, and growth while offering positive alternatives to the environments in which gang activity takes hold.
The organization was established in 2015 in memory of Alcardo Andrews, a young man who lost his life to gang violence in Hanover Park. Before his passing, he was committed to creating positive change in his community and dreamed of a future free from gangsterism.
Today, under the leadership of his mother, Avril Andrews, the Foundation is working to make that vision a reality.
