Black Celebration in My Secret Garden (with Depeche Mode) [1988 mixtape]

Black Celebration in My Secret Garden | Recorded 22-24/2 1988 Created in early 1988, when I was 14 years of age, before I had any sensible equipment like two turntables with pitch, or even a mixer. I somehow managed to connect my compact stereo with my mum's. Hers had a belt-driven turntable which could be slightly adjusted in pitch, if you were gentle with the 33/45-switch. It was also the only one where you could adjust the volume, using the volume slider. But you couldn't cue in something on it. Mine was direct-driven, and the only possible way to cue in the next record. It also had the best tape pause-button, which was extremely important since I had to switch "turntables" between every record to be able to adjust the pitch. Both our stereos sounded really crap, but hers had better low-end and highs while mine sounded like a tin-can of mids, making every tape-cut even more obvious. So to mix you'd have to cue in from mine, pause somewhere you will remember, move the record to the other turntable, get the next one and put it on mine, play them together and check how much "pitch" adjustment will be needed to match their tempos, and remember it, play the moved record and un-pause at the right place, wait and cue in the next one, fade out the other one using the volume slider. When I sometimes wanted to extend a break in a track, to make the transition, I had to go through a tedious and time consuming process. First, mix as above for as long as the break lasts. Hit pause on the next beat. Go back on the records, cue in the new one back as many bars as the break lasts, but in enough time before the break to be able to un-pause once it gets there, repeat if needed or let it run and as above. Of course it was recorded on some old crappy tape that had been reused many times already. Blank tapes were expensive for a teenager. So take all this into consideration if listening, and imagine what it could have become with proper gear. Anyway, how many of you did stuff like this in your teens? Hands up! In early 2000, after doing a new DM-mix called "In De Mode", I somehow felt it was about time to revisit and redo these old mixes. That struggle is a totally different story though. But I reworked, recorded and renamed three of them (new titles within brackets below) and put them on my homepage. They somehow went viral on some Depeche Mode forums, causing extreme traffic on the server. (Sorry Slagge!) Two of them eventually surfaced on a bootleg CD, without my knowledge. This could perhaps be interesting trivia for all those who downloaded and listened to the re-recordings back then, to hear how it all started.
