1735: What Was a Morning Like for a Royal Wet Nurse in Joseon

A palace before dawn. A newborn prince. And the woman history almost never names. This episode steps inside Changgyeonggung Palace in 1735 to follow the morning routine of the royal wet nurse who fed the infant Yi Seon — the boy who would later be known as Crown Prince Sado. Before the political tragedy, before the court conflicts, there was a hidden life inside the Joseon inner quarters built on discipline, surveillance, hierarchy, and sacrifice. From predawn feedings on heated ondol floors to inspections by palace officials, monitored meals, strict medical oversight, and the crushing reality of leaving behind her own child, this is a look at the invisible labor that helped sustain a dynasty. 👑 In this video: • the selection of a Joseon royal wet nurse • life inside the women’s quarters of the palace • court hierarchy, kitchens, physicians, and daily routines • how royal infants were raised behind closed doors • the emotional cost of serving the royal family If you enjoy immersive Korean history and overlooked lives from the past, subscribe to Lierdyn and share your thoughts below.
