Because it's pushing the side of the ball, the ball will go in the opposite direction, even if you try to snap forward. But that doesn't mean you'll miss every shot off line, because your shooting hand will compensate by moving to the other side of the ball and pushing in the opposite direction. This is all POSSIBLE to do, it just makes your shot more complicated. Fix the shooting hand first so your guide hand can come off the ball and your release can be more simple and repeatable.
