On January 16th, 2026, in Beijing, Canada's Prime Minister did something no Canadian leader had done in years: he opened the door to Chinese electric cars. The United States built a 100% wall. Canada chose a 6.1% tariff and a quota of 49,000 cars a year. Why? To understand it, you have to look inside the car. In a lab in Livonia, Michigan, engineers took apart a little green BYD Seagull piece by piece, and what they found explains why the whole auto industry is nervous: one wiper, a battery that survives a nail, eight machines packed into one box, and a company that started out making phone batteries. This is the story of what is really inside a BYD, what it means for Ontario's car plants in Brampton, Ingersoll and Windsor, and what Canada can still win.
