At 1 atmosphere, liquid nitrogen boils at -196 °C. It could
never survive a -166 °C surface. But the atmosphere here weighs
21.46 atmospheres, and that pressure pushes nitrogen's boiling
point up to roughly -157 °C. The surface temperature sits just
below that line.
In other words: the sheer weight of the air is what holds these
lakes together. Remove the atmosphere, and the entire surface
flashes into vapor within minutes.
Water is not a liquid on this world. It is bedrock — harder
than granite. Nitrogen, the gas that makes up 78% of the air
you are breathing right now, is what runs downhill here and
pools in the basins.
