Dot Wartime Kitchen never sold these twenty field rations as museum pieces — I actually cooked them the way the men in the trenches learned to, and it changed how I feed my own family. My grandfather Walter came home in 1946, opened a tin of corned beef in his socks, and told my grandmother the fat was the meal. That line sent me into the leaflets and the recipe box, and it's where this whole video starts.
Inside you'll find Spam sliced and fried into fritters, the C ration's meat-and-beans thickened with molasses, biscuit dust standing in for breadcrumbs, Ancel Keys's bacon cheese, real S.O.S., and the British Compo box that turned crushed crackers and jam into a steamed duff my own wife stopped eating to stare at. Twenty rations in total, eighteen you can cook tonight for pocket change, and one German pea sausage that vanished from shelves as recently as 2018.
Every one of these worked because the rules were brutal — a handful of ounces, a tin, a fire — so flavor had to come from technique, not abundance, which is exactly the math most kitchens are doing again right now. 🥫
Come cook one with me tonight, and if this kind of history-on-a-plate is your thing, subscribe and join the rest of us digging through our grandparents' ration cards for dinner.
Dot Wartime Kitchen keeps the frugal cooking of the home front alive, one forgotten recipe at a time.
