I am delighted to share with you a freshly updated interpretation of Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer's "La Marche des Scythes, the firy conclusion to the composer's first and only book of harpsichord pieces, published in 1746. Royer is a late addition to the French Baroque keyboard composers, and his music reflects many of the aspects of that later period... It is more dramatic, more grandiose than earlier examples, but is also simpler and rather less profound as well.
This particular piece is a perfect example of this simplicity and more gritty quality, as it is, in essence, a whacky romp across the keyboard. Nevertheless, I was absolutely delighted, in a very primal sort of way, when I first heard it ten years ago. Yes indeed... It is astonishing to say this, but it has officially been ten years now since I first dared to learn this crazy wild ride of a piece... And only a couple years less since I last engaged with it in any meaningful manner. It is high time, therefore, that I went back and took a fresh new look at one of my old favorites! What has changed? What has stayed the same? Why don't you join me in this epic adventure, and find out for yourself! I certainly had a ton of fun throwing myself back into the chaos... I hope you do as well.
