Living a Life in Christ, Studies in Ephesians Session 24

Are your words building people up—or tearing them down? In this message from Ephesians 4:29–30, we take an honest look at the words we use every day and what they reveal about the way we are living out our faith. Paul’s instruction to let no unwholesome word come from our mouths is about far more than polite conversation. The word translated “unwholesome” carries the picture of something rotten or spoiled—something that may look fine on the surface but has gone bad underneath. That challenges us to examine not only the obvious offenses in our speech, but the subtler ones too: Gossip. Sarcasm. Harsh criticism. Careless words spoken in frustration. As followers of Jesus, we are called to something higher. Our words should reflect the grace we have received and be used to build others up rather than tear them down.
