In 2014, ISIS destroyed the shrine traditionally associated with the prophet Jonah in Mosul, Iraq. But beneath the destroyed site, archaeologists later discovered something extraordinary: tunnels had cut deep into the ancient mound and exposed remains of a massive Assyrian palace dating back roughly 2,700 years. The discoveries connected the site to Esarhaddon, son of the Assyrian king Sennacherib. Cuneiform inscriptions repeatedly identified the palace, while massive winged lamassu figures and carved reliefs revealed the scale and importance of the ancient complex. Then came the biblical connection. Sennacherib appears in the biblical account of the Assyrian campaign against Judah and Jerusalem. The Book of Kings also records that Sennacherib was eventually killed by his own sons, after which Esarhaddon became king. Even more remarkably, an inscription associated with Esarhaddon lists Manasseh, king of Judah, among rulers who supplied materials for his building projects. But this discovery does not prove that Jonah was buried beneath the shrine. The biblical text does not identify his burial place, and the tradition connecting Jonah to this specific hill developed much later.
