Why Are We So Excited for the Alex Eala vs Leylah Fernandez Rematch in Tokyo?

Alex Eala vs Leylah Fernandez could happen AGAIN — this time in Tokyo. Both lefties are in the Pan Pacific Open field, and their head-to-head is locked at 1-1. Back in April, Fernandez handled Eala 6-1, 6-4 on the Stuttgart clay. In July, Eala flipped the script 6-2, 7-6(1) in Washington, the week she became the first Filipina to win a WTA Tour title. Now both of them are at the Toray Pan Pacific Open, a WTA 500 at Ariake Coliseum running October 26 to November 1 — Eala's first appearance at the event, and the last 500 of her season. In this video I break down what the rematch would actually look like on indoor hard, why the lefty-vs-lefty matchup has been so awkward for Eala, what changed between Stuttgart and Washington, and how the Tokyo draw could set it up. 0:00 Both of them are in Tokyo 0:00 Stuttgart: the 6-1, 6-4 wake-up call 0:00 Washington: how Eala solved her 0:00 Why lefty vs lefty matters here 0:00 What Tokyo changes 0:00 The draw scenario Subscribe for WTA breakdowns on Alex Eala and the rest of the tour — new video every time she plays.
