Both engine types were good looking, powerful, successful, loved by many railfans and are preserved. They had similar size of grate area, evaporative heating surface, superheating surface and combine heating surface. ASTF 2900 had a much larger driver and much higher Tractive Effort while CB&Q had 74" driver which was 6" smaller than Class 2900's massive 80" driver but had a better Factor of Adhesion. In this race, both engines needed to tow a 1000 tons testing consist made by pre-war heavyweight Pullman sleeper. Should be an easy job for them, isn't it ? :-)
