Sincerely yours, Spectral Anomaly. ✨
The towers stood like skeletal monoliths against the shifting veil of fog, their rusted spires piercing the sky like the broken fingers of a forgotten civilization. No sound emerged from the hollow latticework of metal and wire, yet the air was thick with an intangible resonance, as if the dead city still whispered through the static of lost transmissions.
Elias adjusted the cracked visor of his rebreather, feeling the slow pulse of his own breath echoing within the mask. He had traveled far to reach this place—a ruin of technology, abandoned by time but still holding its purpose. The towers were meant to listen, to reach beyond the void and grasp at signals from the deep black. Yet now they stood, waiting, silent sentinels of a past that no longer mattered. But something remained here. Something unseen. The moment he had crossed the threshold of the outer perimeter, the static in his receiver had begun to shift. Patterns emerged, buried beneath the digital decay—voices too distorted to understand but too structured to be random.
He climbed the nearest scaffold, metal groaning beneath his weight, his fingers tracing the faded insignias of the corporation that had once owned the facility. He recognized the symbols—Phaedron Communications, an ancient entity that had pioneered deep-space signal tracking. Their records had vanished along with the collapse, but the echoes of their transmissions still lingered in forbidden archives. Elias knew that coming here was a risk. Few returned from the dead zones, and those who did spoke in riddles, their minds lost in the droning whispers of something that should not have been listening.
At the peak of the tower, he found the old array—dish antennas frozen in time, aimed at nothing but the thickening fog. He connected his receiver, scanning through endless layers of static. Then, a pulse. A slow, rhythmic signal, buried in the white noise. It was impossibly old. The timestamp embedded within the waveform suggested it had originated before the fall of the world—before even the first ships had left for the outer colonies. And yet, it was still transmitting.
The signal grew stronger. The fog thickened. The world around him dimmed as though reality itself recoiled from what he was hearing. A voice, synthetic yet somehow organic, emerged from the distortion. It did not speak in words but in raw understanding, bypassing language and embedding itself into the deepest parts of his mind. "WE ARE STILL HERE."
Elias gripped the rusted railing, his pulse hammering against his ribs. The voice was not human. It had never been human. And yet, it had been waiting. Listening. Watching. The towers were not abandoned. They were never abandoned. They had merely been waiting for someone to hear them again.
Then, the static roared to life, and the sky itself seemed to tremble.
