I dug up some old things in a spot with rock walls. Back to the Abyss – Day Three Some places tell their story immediately. Others leave you with more questions than answers. On Day Three of my journey back into the Abyss, I continue searching one of the most remote forests in New Hampshire, following the subtle clues left behind by people who lived here centuries ago. Stone walls, improved ground, old wagon routes, and forgotten clearings all suggest that someone once tried to build a life in this wilderness. Armed with my Fisher F19, I spent hours hiking through the forest until I reached an area where the ground was literally covered in hand-forged nails. That iron "floor" was the first clue that some type of structure once stood here. As I searched the site, more pieces of the puzzle began to appear—a shard of colonial china, an old hinge, an ox shoe, sheet iron, a beautifully made brass object that still remains a mystery, and even an abandoned wagon wheel resting quietly against a stone wall. Yet something about this place doesn't add up. The land had been improved. The stone walls were built. A structure once stood here. But it feels as though the work simply stopped, leaving behind the beginning of a homesite that was never fully completed. Why?
